    Prevalence of vertically transmitted Neospora caninum amongst beef cattle in Phayao, Thailand

    Neospora caninum, the causative agent of neosporosis, is recognised as a significant trigger of abortion and productivity losses in cattle worldwide. Current information regarding to the prevalence of N. caninum in Thailand is limited due to the limitations of detection methods and the difficulty of recovering of viable parasite. Vertical transmission is the main route of N. caninum infection in cattle. Therefore, detection of N. caninum DNA in placental tissue could be a possible means of laboratory diagnosis of neosporosis in live animals, particularly in the context of transplacental transmission. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of transplacentally transmitted N. caninum infection in female beef cattle in the northern Thai province of Phayao by detection of N. caninum DNA in bovine placenta by PCR. A total of 96 bovine placentas were collected from 7 districts of Phayao. Our result indicated that overall PCR prevalence of N. caninum in cattle in this area was 36.5% varying from 16.7–50.0% between districts. The districts with the highest prevalence of infection were Muang (50.0%) and Mae Chai (44.7%). The proportion of N. caninum infection was quite high suggesting that newborn calves were at risk of congenital infection. This study provides a current snapshot of the status of bovine neosporosis in Phayao which could lead to the development of effective strategies for prevention and control this disease

    An analysis of the immune compartment within bovine adipose tissue.

    Adipose tissue (AT) has wide functions as an active endocrine organ acting as a site of nutrient storage and thermogenesis. Recently it has been identified as having a key role in murine and human immunity and inflammation. Type 1 or type 2 immune responses and their respective cytokines have been linked to white or brown AT, respectively. Most dramatic is the involvement of type-2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) in stimulating eosinophil recruitment via interleukin (IL)-13 which in turn stimulates alternative macrophage activation via IL-4/IL-13. Recruited leukocytes are capable of influencing the cellular composition and function of adipose tissue and present a route to combat human obesity, however these processes are poorly understood in ruminants. Here we have characterised the resident leukocytes populations within bovine mesenteric AT (MAT) and subcutaneous AT (SAT), compared with the corresponding mesenteric lymph node (MLN). Concurring with related studies, we find bovine AT has its own resident leukocyte populations where eosinophils and neutrophils dominate. Importantly the proportion of eosinophils or neutrophils corresponded to the adipocyte size found in both depots. Further exploration of this area may have important implications on the food production industry or could be applied to improve the course of pathogenesis during disease

    Direct Parent Engagement to Improve Fundamental Movement Skills in Children: A Systematic Review.

    Fundamental movement skills (FMS) are basic movements in children that represent the building blocks for more complex motor skill development and act as a prerequisite for enduring sport and physical activity (PA) engagement and positive health-related behaviours. The FMS proficiency is currently inadequate worldwide, and consequently there are alarming levels of inactivity and childhood obesity. However, parents are role models to their children and possess the power to influence their PA behaviour. This review investigated if parent-focused interventions could improve FMS in 2-7-year-old children and evaluated which setting and method of parent engagement was most impactful. Keyword searches were conducted via Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Only nine articles met the inclusion criteria. No research originated from the United Kingdom, highlighting the urgent need for further FMS interventions involving parents. The FMS improved in all nine studies, with significant changes in seven of the articles (p < 0.05). Parent-child co-activity, the education and empowerment of parents, and the provision of clear FMS guidance, messaging, and structure can positively influence children's FMS. Recently, smartphone apps have increased the feasibility and accessibility of FMS practice at home and may be integral to future interventions. Further research with direct parental involvement is clearly warranted

    Pervasiveness of the IQ Rise: A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis

    Background: Generational IQ gains in the general population (termed the Flynn effect) show an erratic pattern across different nations as well as across different domains of intelligence (fluid vs crystallized). Gains of fluid intelligence in different countries have been subject to extensive research, but less attention was directed towards gains of crystallized intelligence, probably due to evidence from the Anglo-American sphere suggesting only slight gains on this measure. In the present study, development of crystallized intelligence in the German speaking general population is assessed. Methodology/Principal Findings: To investigate whether IQ gains for crystallized intelligence are in progress in Germanspeaking countries, two independent meta-analyses were performed. By means of a cited reference search in ISI Web of Science, all studies citing test manuals and review articles of two widely-used salient measures of crystallized intelligence were obtained. Additionally, the electronic database for German academic theses was searched to identify unpublished studies employing these tests. All studies reporting participants mean IQ or raw scores of at least one of the two measures were included in the present analyses, yielding over 500 studies (.1,000 samples;.45,000 individuals). We found a significant positive association between years of test performance and intelligence (1971–2007) amounting to about 3.5 IQ points per decade.     Metabolic flexibility as a major predictor of spatial distribution in microbial communities

    A better understand the ecology of microbes and their role in the global ecosystem could be achieved if traditional ecological theories can be applied to microbes. In ecology organisms are defined as specialists or generalists according to the breadth of their niche. Spatial distribution is often used as a proxy measure of niche breadth; generalists have broad niches and a wide spatial distribution and specialists a narrow niche and spatial distribution. Previous studies suggest that microbial distribution patterns are contrary to this idea; a microbial generalist genus (Desulfobulbus) has a limited spatial distribution while a specialist genus (Methanosaeta) has a cosmopolitan distribution. Therefore, we hypothesise that this counter-intuitive distribution within generalist and specialist microbial genera is a common microbial characteristic. Using molecular fingerprinting the distribution of four microbial genera, two generalists, Desulfobulbus and the methanogenic archaea Methanosarcina, and two specialists, Methanosaeta and the sulfate-reducing bacteria Desulfobacter were analysed in sediment samples from along a UK estuary. Detected genotypes of both generalist genera showed a distinct spatial distribution, significantly correlated with geographic distance between sites. Genotypes of both specialist genera showed no significant differential spatial distribution. These data support the hypothesis that the spatial distribution of specialist and generalist microbes does not match that seen with specialist and generalist large organisms. It may be that generalist microbes, while having a wider potential niche, are constrained, possibly by intrageneric competition, to exploit only a small part of that potential niche while specialists, with far fewer constraints to their niche, are more capable of filling their potential niche more effectively, perhaps by avoiding intrageneric competition. We suggest that these counter-intuitive distribution patterns may be a common feature of microbes in general and represent a distinct microbial principle in ecology, which is a real challenge if we are to develop a truly inclusive ecology

    Using geographically weighted regression to explore the spatially heterogeneous spread of bovine tuberculosis in England and Wales

    An understanding of the factors that affect the spread of endemic bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is critical for the development of measures to stop and reverse this spread. Analyses of spatial data need to account for the inherent spatial heterogeneity within the data, or else spatial autocorrelation can lead to an overestimate of the significance of variables. This study used three methods of analysis—least-squares linear regression with a spatial autocorrelation term, geographically weighted regression (GWR) and boosted regression tree (BRT) analysis—to identify the factors that influence the spread of endemic bTB at a local level in England and Wales. The linear regression and GWR methods demonstrated the importance of accounting for spatial differences in risk factors for bTB, and showed some consistency in the identification of certain factors related to flooding, disease history and the presence of multiple genotypes of bTB. This is the first attempt to explore the factors associated with the spread of endemic bTB in England and Wales using GWR. This technique improves on least-squares linear regression approaches by identifying regional differences in the factors associated with bTB spread. However, interpretation of these complex regional differences is difficult and the approach does not lend itself to predictive models which are likely to be of more value to policy makers. Methods such as BRT may be more suited to such a task. Here we have demonstrated that GWR and BRT can produce comparable outputs
